LE GRAND RETURN

a tale of friendship and remembrance

Written & Directed by Alan Stockdill

Winner: " BEST NEW WRITING"

Greater Manchester Fringe Awards 2015

It’s 1994 and the 50th anniversary of D Day looms. Tommy, Alf and Edwin are incarcerated in Coldrick Nursing Home. In spite of his ever-worsening heart condition, D Day veteran Tommy is determined to break out and rejoin his old comrades on the Normandy beaches. But how will they all get out — and what will happen along the way?  This gentle comedy drama is about love, remembrance, war and peace.

[The story was loosely inspired by the true story of the late D-Day veteran Bernard Jordan who ‘escaped’ from his nursing home to attend World War Two commemoration services in France.]

“Beautifully expressed, several people near to us were in tears, it was difficult not to join them. I hope many take the opportunity to see LE GRAND RETURN on its tour – I urge them to do so. This is truly what theatre is all about...”

“A stunning performance of a stunning play...”

“Beautiful writing, wonderful moving performances, belly laughs and running gags, tragedy and sorrow of friends lost and sacrifices made...”

“Catch this brilliant production while you can…"

Award-winning biographical musical roller coaster.

Following sold-out tours of the United Kingdom and Ireland, including a 3-night run at The Swan Dobcross in 2014 and receiving rave reviews at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, 'Somewhere Under The Rainbow: The Liza Minnelli Story' features Sharon Sexton delivering her award-winning, compelling portrayal of Ms Minnelli, sharing legendary stories and secrets from a fascinating career and belting her way through many of the signature tunes from the Minnelli songbook, including Mein Herr, Some People and Maybe This Time to name just a few.

Written by award-winning Cillian O’Donnachadha, this stunning one-woman show is set in the intimacy of Liza’s dressing room, where the diva invites the audience to step beyond the footlights and decide for themselves what is truth and illusion about her life and career.

This two act, musical roller coaster charts the illustrious performer’s life, loves and music, as Liza steps out from the shadows of her superstar mother, Judy Garland, to establish a substantial career as a performer in her own right.

But sometimes it’s hard to tell where the rainbow ends and the horizon begins...

Public Transport presents

A COMEDY DOUBLE BILL

of Physical Theatre and Comic Songs

"WE ARE BRONTË"

Devised and performed by Angus Barr and Sarah Corbett.

followed by a selection of

COMIC SONGS BY

GUS BARR

WE ARE BRONTË is a piece of comic visual theatre inspired by the real and imaginary worlds of Yorkshire's literary siblings, presented in Publick Transport’s irreverent style.

Physical theatre collides with stand-up, clowning and improvisation as two performers deconstruct not only gothic themes of love, madness, repression and revenge, but also themselves.

Part play, part enquiry into the act of putting on a play, this promises to be no ordinary Brontë adaptation.

"Physical theatre at its most superb and most silly." Public Reviews

Devised and performed by Angus Barr and Sarah Corbett | Directed by Ed Rapley | Dramaturgy by Susie Donkin | Additional performance and movement direction by Brenda Waite | Set by Dan Adyman | Props by Tomasin Cuthbert | Supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England | Additional support from PACTS, Tobacco Factory Theatres and Bristol Ferment.

COMIC SONGS BY GUS BARR

For the second part of the evening, you are invited to be entertained by Gus Barr's wickedly satirical and politically incorrect comic songs.

Gus Barr is a banjulele-wielding David to the Goliaths of Hypocrisy, Greed & Injustice. His comic songs will soon bring them all crashing to their knees. (At least that is the theory.)

The MIKRON Theatre Company Presents

'ONE OF EACH'

by Deborah McAndrew

Storms at sea, saucy secrets and sibling rivalry...

In 2015 MIKRON are telling two wonderfully British stories. See them at The Swan 7&8 April and 20/21 October 2015.

Sir Caspian Delamere is a man on a mission, to find the finest Fish and Chips in Britain. He's narrowed it down to two seaside vendors - finalists for his GOLDEN FISH-FORK award.

By coincidence The Pickled Egg and The Silver Darling are rival establishments run by twins, Roderick and Annette Whale. Unable to agree on the best way to cook this iconic dish, they went their separate ways years ago, and now they find their food and their philosophies in direct competition for the coveted GOLDEN FISH-FORK.

Which portion will prevail? Rod's old fashioned, homely style? Or Nettie's high-tech twist on

tradition?

Their story is covered by unscrupulous journalist, Meriel Hacker, and she is after a

scoop.

So what will she do when she hooks a much bigger fish than she ever expected...?

Set sail with Mikron this summer for a savoury tale about the British National Dish.

Hot, salty and wrapped in newspaper!

MIKE SWEENEY & PADDY O'HARE

with THE COLLECTIVE

support: MAYBE FRANK

Mike Sweeney and Paddy O'Hare are two musicians who've come together to write, record and perform their own interpretation of 'Roots' music. Taking their cues from The Blues, Country, Folk, Rockabilly, Rock n Roll and influences from the likes of Elmore James through to Woodie Guthrie, Mike and Paddy use a mix of acoustic and retro-electric guitars, harmonica, banjo, mandolin and Cajon to produce a unique amalgam of them all. Playing live as a five piece group known as Mike Sweeney & Paddy O'Hare with The Collective, their Walking Down The Line debut EP of original songs was recently released.

MIKE SWEENEY previously found success with punk outfit The Salford Jets in 1977 with minor hits Inc' : Gina I've Got A Cortina and Their Top 75 hit in 1980 Who You Looking At, and has spent more that thirty years as a radio DJ, arriving at his new home BBC Radio Manchester in 2014. PADDY O'HARE first took to the stage aged two eventually trading his cornet in for his first guitar (given to him by his Uncle Kevin Neill of 60s hit band The Karl Denver Trio) and by the noughties playing such venues as: The Cavern Club - Liverpool, and Manchester Academy to rave reviews for his vocals and guitar work; "Particular note to Paddy there, the lead guitar was terrific!" (Andy Crane. BBC Radio).

After practising and writing some songs together in Paddy's front room, the pair who had previously worked together at 106.1 Rock Radio, began performing as a duo in May 2012. Mike and Paddy encouraged by the positive feedback began recording their EP. This eventually lead to the formation of MIKE SWEENEY & PADDY O'HARE with THE COLLECTIVE consisting of Mike (Lead Vocals/Guitar/Harmonica), Paddy (Lead Vocals/Lead Guitar), Matt Jones (Vocals/Mandolin/Banjo/Guitar/Harmonica), Dave WIlliams (Bass) and Phil Grainger (Drums). The band built their reputation during 2013 leading to support slots with Ginger Baker, Bill Wyman, Wishbone Ash and db Band (Ex-Supergrass), plus successful sets at Mockfest (to 5000 people), Great British R & B Festival - Colne, Ramsbottom Festival, Diggle Blues Festival, Headlander Festival, and Holmfirth Picturedrome, plus live sessions on Real Radio XS and BBC Radio Lancashire.

Supported by MAYBE FRANK

Maybe Frank are a Manchester-based acoustic duo, priding themselves on their song-writing and close harmonies and consist of Josh Wood and Sam Winterbottom. They have inspirations from Bob Marley, to John Mayer, to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young & many more...

SUNDAY NIGHT JAZZ

DJANGOLOGIE

HOT CLUB GYPSY SWING

Certainly one of the Jazz highlights at The Swan in 2014, we are delighted to be welcoming back this top class group of musicians from the North-East.

Hot club inspired bands are far from a rarity on the U.K. jazz scene, but what marks Djangologie out as something special is the way they take the original spirit of the music and breathe new life into it. Noted for the way that they maintain the swinging spirit of the great Reinhardt-Grappelli ensembles but without trying to be a carbon copy, the music of Djangologie is firmly rooted in the Hot Club sound of the swing era. This can be found in the virtuosic performances of the time honoured 1930’s hot club classics and a repertoire of exquisitely written, gypsy jazz originals. This is inspired rather than deferential homage.

All four members share a detailed understanding of the gypsy jazz tradition, coupled with a broader appreciation of the developments in jazz throughout the 20th century. It is with this that they are able to generate the sound and excitement of the Hot Club du France ensembles, whilst preserving their own unique identity. Played with virtuoso brio by four of the finest exponents of the style, the essential commitment to music rooted in the sound of Django Reinhardt remains absolutely at the heart of their approach.

Guitarists James Birkett and Giles Strong combine immense versatility with a profound love and understanding of the history of jazz guitar. Violinist Emma Fisk takes the swing of Stephane Grappelli but also imbues it with traces of her other musical passions- classical music and bluegrass. Founder member (and composer) Mick Shoulder anchors the group with a big bass sound and a driving rhythmic pulse.

With their intense brand of swing, Djangologie continue to draw, thrill and entertain ever-increasing audience numbers; converting the new and definitely supplying the goods to any hot club aficionado.

However you choose to describe the music, one thing is indisputable - it really is tres bonne.

“ Djangologie evoke the authentic sound of Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli”

(Desmond Carrington, BBC Radio 2)

FAULTY TOWERS

THE DINING EXPERIENCE

This globetrotting show is truly quite legendary, selling out at venues like the Royal Albert Hall and Sydney Opera House. It continues to tour the world in 2015 – and it’s returning to us in July for two nights only!

Waited upon by Basil, Sybil and Manuel, this is fully immersive, highly improvised and site-specific comedy theatre at its best. Only a third of the show scripted, so anything can happen as you take a seat in the 'Fawlty Towers' restaurant… Expect all the best gags, shambolic service and a ‘70s style 3-course meal in ‘top end entertainment that’s not to be missed’ (What’s on London). Just don’t mention the war!

Internationally acclaimed by audiences and critics alike.

Faulty Towers The Dining Experience was born in Brisbane in 1997 and made its international debut in 2008 at the Edinburgh Fringe, where it’s sold out every year since. It opened a residency in London’s West End in October 2012 and continues there still. Eight teams of cast now tour the world non-stop. This will be their third visit to Dobcross.

Talking Stock Productions present

"LE GRAND RETURN" by Alan Stockdill

TWO EXTRA PERFORMANCES ADDED!

It’s 1994 and the 50th anniversary of D Day looms. Tommy, Alf and Edwin are incarcerated in Coldrick Nursing Home. In spite of his ever-worsening heart condition, D Day veteran Tommy is determined to break out and rejoin his old comrades

on the Normandy beaches.

This gentle comedy drama is about love,

remembrance, war and peace (brought to us from the team behind 'The Last Memory' and 'Godfrey's Last Stand').

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. This play was first performed at The Swan in February. The audience responded so well and Tim and Michael enjoyed it so much that the cast and crew were booked there and then for these two extra dates!

Lass Productions & Scytheplays Ltd presents

'TOGETHER IN ELECTRIC DREAMS'

by Daniel Thackeray (based on an idea by Gareth Kavanagh)

When Alan Sugar dined with Sir Clive Sinclair...

... it was a dinner with only one winner.

From two of Manchester's leading fringe theatre companies, the acclaimed comedy-drama by Oldham writer Daniel Thackeray, inspired by a remarkable true story.

In 1983 computing pioneer Clive Sinclair was knighted for his services to the British electronics industry, but following a number of disastrous new products such as the infamous C5 electric car, by 1986 his company Sinclair Electronics was facing bankruptcy. Meanwhile the industry's new leading figure had arisen: a former East End trader named Alan Sugar, with his company Amstrad.  The only hope for Sir Clive now is that he can negotiate a rescue deal with his arch-rival over dinner in Sugar's chosen venue - a Japanese karaoke restaurant.

Glowing with nostalgia for the music and technology of the 1980s, Together in Electric Dreams charts a comic and poignant encounter between two very different businessmen, as the gentlemanly Sir Clive must navigate the hostile waters of East End pragmatism and Eastern cuisine in a desperate bid to save his company.

Lass Productions in partnership with Scytheplays Ltd have made a name for themselves since 2011 producing quirky and original plays inspired by science, science fiction, classic television and comic books, such as 'The Ballad of Halo Jones', 'The Say Can Blues', 'Coronation St 1977', 'V for Vendetta' and 'Centurion'.

"Daniel Thackeray gives an uncanny performance as stern, polite Sinclair, while Matthew O'Neill portrays a charismatic Sugar... The dialogue is slick and quick.  Altogether a lot of laughs and worth a trip down memory lane."

- Elaine O'Flynn, Manchester Evening News

"A charming portrayal of a business meeting that would forever change the dynamic of the British electronics industry, with themes still resonant today... Together in Electric Dreams will leave you with a song in your heart."

- The Fiction Stroker

"A brilliant sense of fun and intrigue"

- Tracey Lowe, www.thepublicreviews.com

"It's the little touches which make every Scytheplays production so special."

Sunday Night Jazz at The Swan Dobcross with Jeremy Sassoon
The Jeremy Sassoon Quartet's long-awaited return to The Swan

SUNDAY 26th APRIL 2015 at 7.30pm

SUNDAY NIGHT JAZZ

JAZZ & BLUES with

The JEREMY SASSOON QUARTET

Jeremy Sassoon’s distinctive and evocative style encompasses Jazz, Blues and Soul, featuring the music of Ray Charles, Nat King Cole and many more. He is much demand internationally, regularly headlining at the world’s top jazz venues - New York, San Francisco, Sydney, Berlin and Ronnie Scotts Jazz Club in London. We are delighted to be able to include Upstairs at The Swan Dobcross in this distinguished list, as this will be Jeremy's long-awaited return to The Swan!

Jeremy’s musical beginnings were rooted in classical music, having been selected as a child for a place at the Royal Northern College of music junior school where he studied piano and trumpet for 11 years. At 18 he rebelled against the expected musical career by choosing one in medicine, qualifying as a doctor and later going on to complete postgraduate training as a hospital psychiatrist in Manchester.

In 1995, Jeremy left medicine to pursue a full-time career in music; initially as a trumpeter, then later as a pianist/keyboard player and band leader.

Since Jeremy last appeared here, his recording of "The Things We've Handed Down" was featured on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs and reached no 1 in the iTunes vocal download chart. Already in 2015 he has appeared at the A-Trane Jazz Club in Berlin and played to a sell out crowd at Pizza Express Jazz Club in London.

The MIKRON Theatre Company presents

'RAISING AGENTS'

100 years of the Women’s Institute

Writer & Lyricist: Maeve Larkin

Composers: O’Hooley & Tidow

Director: Marianne McNamara

Musical Director: Rebekah Hughes

In 2015 MIKRON are telling two wonderfully British stories. See them at The Swan 7&8 April and 20/21 October 2015.

Bunnington WI is a bit down-at-heel. Dwindling membership means they can barely afford the hall, let alone a decent speaker. So when a PR guru becomes a member, the women are glad of new blood.

Initially.

The milk of WI kindness begins to sour when she rebrands them the Bunnington Bunnies. They're hopping. With stakes higher than a five tiered cake stand, a battle ensues for the very soul of Bunnington, perhaps the WI itself!

On the threshold of one century into the next, this tale of hobbyists and lobbyists asks how much we should know our past or how much we should let go of it.

Above all else, like the WI itself, Raising Agents is a story of friendship.

Tickets £11

Peter Young's Comedy Night

AN (ADULT) EVENING WITH
BILLY PEARCE

National treasure, and without doubt one of Britain’s most talented and best loved comedians & performers, Billy Pearce emerged from the fertile talent fields of Butlins in the mid 1980′s. Multi Award winner Billy, has won just about every comedy award going, including a British comedy award, Solo comedian of the year, and Best television comedy newcomer at the London Palladium.

Billy, who was born in Leeds, West Yorkshire, first came to National prominence when he appeared in Central TV’s top talent show ‘New Faces’, winning his heat and qualifying for the final. His impact was immediate and he was quickly snapped up for stage and TV appearances, culminating with his first series for BBC television, ‘You Gotta Be Joking’.

When variety fell out of fashion in the 1990s, with the rise of alternative comedy, Billy found a niche in family-friendly panto while keeping the razor-sharp wit needed to entertain adult-only audiences. The combination paid off, as evidenced by his ticket sales.

There are few stages upon which Billy has not appeared. He’s broken Box Office records at a number of National Theatres including his Summer season at the Blackpool Grand Theatre, and his Christmas panto appearance at the Bradford Alhambra, where the Theatre took a bank busting £1.3 Million.

Billy even trod the boards of Musical Theatre appearing alongside Jimmy Osmond in the smash hit musical ‘Boogie Nights’. He followed this by having a stint as narrator in the ‘Rocky Horror Show’.

A fine actor, Billy has also appeared on numerous shows, including ITV’s ‘Heartbeat’ and the award winning BBC drama ‘The Street’.

This evening will be raising funds to help Dobcross Silver Band's trip to the Menin Gate to play the last post and lay a wreath on behalf of the people of Dobcross & Saddleworth.

SUNDAY NIGHT JAZZ

with SPILT MILK with guest vocalist Kim Wellens

Join us for the perfect extension to the weekend - another top-class 'Sunday Night Jazz' session Upstairs at The Swan.

Spilt Milk are a forward thinking trio from Manchester that write and perform original and rearranged instrumental material. They cover a wide variety of styles within their music and take influence mainly from the modern sounds of Phronesis, Snarky Puppy, Cinematic Orchestra, The Bad Plus, Kit Downes trio, Gwilym Simcock, Hiromi and many more. In some cases, Spilt Milk even perform their own versions of tunes from the artists listed above.

Spilt Milks's compositions are allowed to live and take different directions through improvisation, without losing their characteristics. Their sound varies from huge and energetic to quiet and intense but always grooves.

Spilt Milk will be inviting guest vocalist - the stunning Kim Wellens on stage for the third and final set, to round the night off in style. Kim will perform some of her favourite jazz/soul/pop tunes and with Spilt Milk's twist on the arrangements, it will be a cool and satisfying contrast but also remain firmly in place with the vibe of the show.

Freerange Theatre Company presents

'SPOONFACE STEINBERG'

Written by Lee Hall (author of Billy Elliot)

Starring Rebecca Fenwick as Spoonface

Directed by Hugo Chandor

Spoonface Steinberg is both hilarious and heartrending. This play is about faith, love and the meaning of life as viewed through the eyes of Spoonface, a seven year old autistic girl diagnosed with cancer. It is a monologue that is in turn extremely funny, intensely moving and profound. Spoonface Steinberg was originally written as a play for radio and includes recordings of Maria Callas.

Initially broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and winning Lee Hall several awards, the piece was subsequently adapted for the stage.

'...funny, intense and poetic.' Daily Telegraph.

'A hard, sad, beautiful play.' Sunday Times.

A ‘Questions and Answers’ session will run after each performance when the Director (Hugo Chandor) and Actress (Rebecca Fenwick) will be on hand to discuss and help unpick any aspect of the experience directly with members of the audience.

MANCHESTER THEATRE AWARDS

18/06/2013 THE SWAN, DOBCROSS

- this superb production ...  as heart breaking, uplifting and thought-provoking as you could possibly hope to find ...

- a uniquely joyful perspective on life and death, reflected in an often unexpectedly hilarious monologue ...

It’s no mean feat to play a young child convincingly, let alone one with autism, but Fenwick pulls it off with aplomb. Seek out this fine production.

Lee Hall is perhaps better known for writing 'Billy Elliot' and more recently the screenplay for Warhorse. These writings earned him The British Independent Film Award, The Laurence Olivier Award, The Evening Standard Award, Tony Award and an Oscar nomination among others. However, it was Spoonface Steinberg that launched his career.
